Week 2: Overview of Social Media

  • Which social media platforms seem geared towards personal use? Why do you think so?
The social media platforms geared toward personal use seem to be the ones that are based on user pics and videos such as instagram, snapchat, and and tumblr, for example. I think this is the case because those types of platforms are quick, easy and instantaneous, which lends itself to the sharing of ones personal life without putting a lot of time or thought into it.

  • Which ones seem to work better for business? What makes them seem more suitable to business use?
As a nutritionist, people often ask me if I think a particular food is healthy, or what is the best way to eat. My answer is always the same; it depends on the person. I would imagine the same is true for which social media platforms are better for business: it depends on the business. It would seem, for example, that a business that is artistic in nature such as photography or jewelry would do well with something like instagram or pinterest where beautiful pics of new product could be easily posted every day. It would also seem as though the generation of the target audience would play a role in determining the best platform. Businesses targeting older generations would probably do better with one of the older platforms like facebook or linkedin, although I believe that one is primarily used for networking.

  • Do any seem to work well for both? How are they used differently?
Facebook and twitter seem to work well for both personal and business use. In business they are used to attract followers and build an online community of loyal customers. In personal use they are used for sharing the details of ones life with ones "friends" and followers.

  1. Hey Eva!
I liked that you related your answers back to your professional experience to validate your response! From your point that you made regarding platforms being fit depending on the business seemed spot on. There are platforms for every business, but it will depend on the content and what they're selling, as you mentioned. Some other examples of social media platforms that could be utilized are Instagram's shop now feature, or Yotpo! These would be geared more towards start-ups selling products. Good job!

    2. Hi Eva,
I loved reading your post. It’s so true that what may work for one business might not work for another. I think it’s also based on users a certain business is trying to target. Like you said, a business could post beautiful jewelry everyday on Instagram, as well as have people with many followers post their products on their page to redirect to their website for more business. Great post!
