Week 10A: Blogging for Business

Appealing to people's emotions by adding human interest to a blog makes sense no matter what the business. Businesses can connect with their audience in a deeper and more meaningful way if they show they are human and share the same human emotions we all have- joy, sorrow, hope, fear, etc.

I would imagine the key to making this strategy work would be to match the way the human interest element is incorporated into the blog posts with the particular business. A large, impersonal business, for example could feature their employees and share stories about their personal lives. Or, they could feature stories about their customers using their products. A small business could capitalize on the struggles and joys of being involved in all aspects of the business and share behind the scenes moments of daily operations.

For me personally, I will share parts of my own health struggles and triumphs so that my audience will know that I understand what they are going through on a deep and personal level. Hopefully that will add some credibility and encourage them to trust me as a valuable guide and resource.

However a business chooses to incorporate human interest into their blog, I think it is essential that it done with sincerity, respect, and tact. Otherwise it will come across as cheesy, contrived, or worse! Whoever is writing the blogs should have a good understanding of how to utilize the personal element to evoke the desired emotions in their audience.

  2. Hi, Eva. I think that your idea about having large corporations feature personal stories about some of their employees on their websites is rather clever. A lot times, customers imagine that large companies are kind of like government bureaucracies where responses from those they supposedly serve go unheeded and ignored for a long time. Your suggested strategy brings a degree of humanity and sociability to large companies, and since humans tend to be social creatures, this strategy will definitely generate more business for those who employ it. In addition, I admire your willingness to reveal more about your own personal health challenges and successes. Medical and health issues still tend to be private, and many people who do not feel comfortable with talking about or seeking out this information in real life often seek it online. Your willingness to talk about your own health issues would certainly make your clients more inclined to comfortably talk about theirs after you start such a discussion. Hopefully, all businesses that operate online will eventually learn how communicate with their customers in organic ways such as this, and not in contrived, premeditated ways. A business that earns people’s trust will usually gain more customers than one that does not.
