Other Social Media

After reviewing most of the suggested "other" social media outlets, I decided to investigate Linkedin and Meetup to see if they would be a good fit for my business. Below are my findings.

Linkedin

I was expecting Linkedin to be a bunch of resumes and head shots. Surprisingly, it is my favorite of all the social platforms so far. Because I am a solo business owner and my practice is online, I relish the idea of networking with other like-minded professionals. I particularly found the Groups feature to be intriguing. I selected the following groups to illustrate how Groups could benefit me and my business.

Health and Wellness Product Information Group
 Standard group
21,941 members
About this group
Our members are committed to spreading the word about personal wellness and making lifestyle and behavioral changes. This group looks for talented and dedicated people that have a passion for excellence in health care, exercise and nutrition wellness.  Please join us today.

This is a large, general health and wellness group where I could see what other people in the industry and related industry are talking about and how they are marketing themselves. In such a large group, I might not make any individual connections, but will be a great research opportunity.

A Gut Decision: Colostrum Therapy for Leaky Gut Syndrome
 Standard group
19 members
About this group
Our group will serve as a scholarly discussion forum for medical professionals in private practice to learn more about Leaky Gut Syndrome and the emerging treatment, Colostrum Therapy. The group is sponsored by Douglas A. Wyatt, one of the world's leading research and education authorities in the area of biologics, and founder of Sovereign Laboratories LLC. To facilitate and spark discussion, we will post articles on the topic of Colostrum Therapy, and will ask specific questions of the group.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, this is a small, highly specific group where I could definitely "meet" every member and make valuable connections.

Holistic and Integrative Health
 Standard group
11,421 members
About this group
If you are a professional in the field of Natural and Integrative Health, we have a common interest: building a bridge between the established health system and the alternative and holistic practices, making this known to the general public and providing more options to make an informed decision when it comes to managing health. If you are a person interested in making educated decisions when it comes to your health and wellbeing, this group is also a place for you and we welcome your participation.

This group seems to have a mix of public and professional members. This would provide an opportunity to interact with both collegues and potential clients.

Meetup

Again, because I do not get the networking opportunity a traditional workplace would provide, I will need to create my own opportunities. Also, since everything I do is online, I like the idea of some in-person networking. Meetup has many different types of professional networking groups available. Some focus on referrals and tracking business leads, some focus on specific industries and others focus on social connections and building professional relationships.

I chose the one listed below to join:

Professional Women Networking- Carlsbad
PWN is unique in that it offers a special blend of many types of networking groups. Fostering social connections, business development for our members, industry inclusivity, and mutual support are all critical parts of our organization.

PWN is a place where women entrepreneurs and professionals connect and lean on one another. Our meetings offer members a place to learn, develop skills and expertise, ask for advice, give advice, admit to some problems in a safe space and feel confident in ourselves. Our membership is committed to the whole life business model (balance in family, job/business, health, spirituality, fun, etc.)

The reason I chose this one is because it seemed the most organized, inclusive, and in line with my values. I like the fact that they meet once a week at a set time and place. This would enable me to build real connections and relationships. Also, the group is small, with only 50 members. Finally, they invite you to sit in on two meetings before joining to see if it would be a good fit before joining.
